Jingjing: Mark, I've just been reading about things intelligent people seldom or never say.

Jingjing:  That sounds like a way to focus on the interesting stuff.

Mark:  Those are all pretty interesting, with none that are too obvious for more detail.

Jingjing: Which one would you like to know more about at the outset?

Mark:  Two of the phrases toward the end seem to contradict each other.

Mark:  Well, give me the rationale for avoiding number eight: I can't do it.

Jingjing:  According to the article—and I mostly agree with it—people who say that a lot come across as lacking confidence. People stop trusting them with important tasks.

Mark:OK, so, then if somebody says something will only take a minute, it's the opposite, they're confident enough.

Jingjing:  If they're talking about a task they've done a thousand times, and could do in their sleep, they might have the right level of confidence saying that.  But if it turns out that they're wrong—

Jingjing:  Yeah, that's it.  So, somebody wants to have a range of confidence, never too much or too little.

Mark:  I get it.  Don't nail yourself down to a specific time frame.  What if something's not easy at all, or not really in your wheelhouse?

Jingjing:  You know who might be better at this?  Jerry in the accounts department.

Jingjing: Mark, have you given any more thought to the phrases we talked about last time?

Mark:  That makes perfect sense.  And I'd like to think I avoid blame-shifting.
